On Thursday, January 23, the 2014 Winter Series of Green Nights at the Library will begin with a one-year review of Morgantown’s single-stream recycling program. The session will take place 6:00–7:30pm at the downtown public library (373 Spruce Street).
Sponsored by the Morgantown Municipal Green Team, this highly interactive session will delve into several new initiatives in recycling in the city, university, and county. All the speakers invited are closely involved in these efforts:
Tom Arnold of the City of Morgantown will lead off the presentation with data on just how much Morgantown is recycling compared with last year, how well the program is working, and what more could be done.
Traci Knabenshue and Stephanie Toothman of WVU’s Facilities Management will describe WVU’s new single-stream recycling program and its implementation.
Other speakers may discuss options for recycling in the county and within the business community.
Back by popular demand, the Green Night will conclude with Scott Dellinger of Greenstar Recycling in Pittsburgh. He will present the company’s video on how all that recycling gets mechanically sorted and will explain the ins and outs of what can and cannot be recycled.
Morgantown launched its single-stream curbside recycling program on January 7, 2013. The city is working hard to reverse its previous 20/80 ratio of recycling/trash to 80/20 through a new “Clean Community” concept.
Targeting the average citizen, Green Nights at the Library is a series of presentations, workshops, and resource nights on green topics that continues monthly at the downtown public library. Parking is available across the street and a nearby parking structure.
Three additional Green Nights have been firmed up so far:
- February 20: Prospects for expanding solar energy in West Virginia
- April 5: Organic Gardener’s Resource Fair at the last Winter Farmer’s Market
- May 15: Results of a greenhouse gas inventory for Morgantown, part of a larger project to assess and implement energy-saving measures and reduce greenhouse gas emissions conducted by Downstream Strategies.
